BRUTAL POLICE ACTION AGAINST PROTESTING TEACHERS

BRUTAL POLICE ACTIONA AGAINST PROTESTING TEACHERS
On May 27, 2010, Thursday, Karachi police fired tear gas shells, resorted to baton-charge and used water cannons when hundreds of protesting government teachers marching on the Governor's House Karachi. The teachers were protesting against Sindh Education Minister and pressing for the acceptance of their monetary demands including Teachers Allowance and Timing Scale. The law-enforcers used the water cannon for the first time since they were made part of police's anti-riot facilities a few months ago. The police picked up 30 protesting teachers but later released them on personal sureties. Earlier, hundreds of teachers associated with teachers' organizations and professional bodies gathered outside the Karachi Press Club to protest against what they described as "derogatory remarks" made by Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq on the floor of the Sindh Assembly. The minister on Wednesday had criticized the role of the teachers' associations. He told the assembly session that half of the teachers never turned up to work but drew salaries, while others did not take classes on the pretext of strikes. As the number of protesting teachers swelled, their leaders decided to make their protest registered by staging a sit-in outside the Governor's House. The situation turned ugly when the police denied them such a move and insisted that teachers' leaders rollback their protest plan. The teachers' leaders agreed initially to the police request to send their delegations to the chief minister's and governor's houses to hold talks with officials there.
